ARGENTINE WINE TASTINGS: APRIL
Three-quarters of Argentina’s increasingly acclaimed wine is produced in Mendoza, about 800 miles south of Salta. Argentina’s winemaking can be traced to the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors and Jesuits in Salta in 1534. Today, some 6 million gallons are bottled annually in Salta’s Calchaquí and Cafayate Valleys, making the province the country’s fourth-largest wine-producer, despite the challenges of growing grapes at high elevation (5,400 feet versus just 2,000 in Mendoza) and in such an arid and remote location. Join us as we taste through a different selection of Argentine wines each week focusing on the well-known regions and displaying a selection of hand-picked wines from small-growers. Did you know? Mendoza is the leading producer of wine in Argentina and the majority of vineyards are found in Maipu and Lujan. Historically, the region was dominated by production of wine from Cereza and Criolla Grande, but in recent years, Malbec became the region’s most popular planting. Did you know? After Mendoza, the San Juan region is the second largest producer of wine with 116,000 acres planted as of 2003. The climate of this region is considerably hotter and dried than Mendoza with rainfall averaging 6 inches per year. Did you know? The region of La Rioja was one of the first areas to be planted by Spanish missionaries and has the longest continued history of wine production in Argentina. Did you know? Most of Cafayate region in Salta is located at 5,446 feet above sea level. The climate of the area experiences a foehn effect which traps rain producing cloud cover in the  mountains and leaves the area dry and sunny. Did you know? The wine regions of Patagonia experience considerably cooler climates than the other major regions to the north which provides a long, drawn-out growing season in the chalky soils of the area.

ITALIAN WINE TASTINGS: MAY
Italy is a country full of amazing wine producing areas. Each region is rich with history and has complex variations of wines produced based on the particular soils, climate, and elevation. Join us as we taste through a different selection of Italian wines each week focusing on the well-known regions and displaying a selection of hand-picked wines from small-growers. Did you know? Sardegna, best known for being the second largest island in the Mediterranean and an autonomous region of Italy, has been under the rule of numerous kingdoms and empires which have created a very diverse and unique culture directly influencing its wine production. Its wine industry is characterized by grapes that are not commonly seen in Italy. Did you know? Tuscany has secured its place in the wine world not only through international recognition but also for its iconic wines Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino! Did you know? Emilia Romagna is one of Italy’s oldest wine regions, dating all the way back to the 7th century BC. Did you know? Its name, ‘Piemonte’, literally means “the foot of the mountains” and is known for having the ideal climate for viniculture. The primary grape varietals in this region are Barbera, Moscato, and Nebbiolo. Did you know? Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is known for being the center of viniculture and Italy’s exciting “new” wine region. Its beautiful climate is perfect for growing grapes which started way back in 600 BC when the Greeks introduced viticulture to the island. Did you know? Similar to Sicily, Calabria was strongly influenced by the Greeks whom were the first to bring wine bearing vines to the region. For a time period Calabria was famous throughout Italy and Europe for its wine. It’s most famous and oldest wine, Ciro, gaining immense prestige in the wine world. However, when competition arose from regions in France such as Bordeaux, Calabria lost its glory in the wine industry. While it may not have gained back its popularity that it once held Calabria‘s Ciro still holds its well-known reputation for being an amazing wine and is a treat to taste!

NEW ZEALAND WINE TASTINGS: JUNE
New Zealand extends 1,600km (1000 miles) from sub-tropical Northland (36° S) to the world’s most southerly grape growing region Central Otago (46° S). Vineyards benefit from the moderating effect of the maritime climate (no vineyard is more than 120km, or 80 miles, from the ocean) with long sunshine hours and nights cooled by sea breezes. New Zealand wine is distinctive for its purity, vibrancy and intensity. The long ripening period - a result of cool temperatures - allows flavour development whilst retaining fresh acidity, a balance for which New Zealand wines are renowned. There are a number of distinct major winegrowing regions spread throughout New Zealand, with the majority on the East coast of the Islands in the rain shadow of the mountains. Within these diverse regions, sub-regional characteristics are beginning to show through and wines are now being distinguished as being not just from a wine region, but from a sub-region and a place.

FRENCH WINE TASTINGS: JULY
Over the month of July, we will touch on the regions of Moselle, Alsace, and then Chablis. Of the thirteen official wine regions in Germany, Moselle is the most famous. One reason for its fame is because of its Rieslings it produces. However, in general, Moselle is regarded as having the finest white wines in the world. Alsace is unique because it is wedged right in between France and Germany. This, as a result creates Alsace into a blend of both German and French culture, language, art, food, and wine. What makes Alsace stand out in the wine world is it’s “Dry Riesling”. If there was one word to describe the region of Chablis it would be Chardonnay. The region of Chablis exclusively, only makes wines from chardonnay grapes. Creating wines that can be characterized with words such as light, dry, high minerality, and crisp acidity.  Then, we will cover Burgundy, Jura, Beaujolais, and Chambery. The region of Burgundy is a highly respected wine region as well as being home to some of the most expensive wines in the world. In particular, it is known for its Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. In fact, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the only two grape varietals that Burgundy uses for wine-making. Also using Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes is the small wine region next door, Jura. However, Jura also uses three other local grape varietals known as Poulsard, Trousseau, and Savagnin. Jura has claimed its spot in the lime light through its very distinctive and most notable wine, Vin Juane. It is made very similarly to sherry with Jura’s Savagnin grape and then ages for over six years. Close by to Jura and just south of Burgundy is the regions of Beaujolais and Chambery. Famous for their fruity red wines made from Gamay. Like Burgundy with its focus on just two grape varietals, Beaujolais focuses on making their wines mostly from Gamay and using Pinot Noir sparingly. Then, we will taste through Bergerac, Jurancon, and Cahors. The region of Bergerac is often times overshadowed by its older sister Bordeaux because of its closer proximity and the fact that Bergerac frequently uses the same grapes and makes their wines in the image of Bordeaux’s. Offering a bit more individuality is Cahors, the home to Malbec. This region is the only red wine appellation to not use Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc. Their wines are known for being “black wines” meaning very dark and heavy in color and on the palate. Saving the sweetest region for last is Jurancon in south-western France, making wine since the 14th century. Jurancon only makes white wines, and if you are in the mood for something sweet than this is the place to go. To put into perspective how sweet Jurancon wines are, Coke has about 108 grams of sugar in one liter. Standard dry, white wines have about 182 grams of sugar per liter. Jurancon wines however, their standard is 247 grams and their late harvest has 281 grams of sugar per liter. Finally, we will taste Rhone, Provence, Languedoc, and Champagne! For over 2,600 years the region of Provence in southeast France has been making wine. In southern France is Languedoc which is, to date, the largest producing wine region in the world. To put into perspective how much wine is made in this region; Languedoc makes more wine than the entire United States. The last region we will taste from is the region Champagne, located in the northeast of France and home to some of the most famous sparkling wines. The three main grape varietals used to make Champagne are pinot noir, pinot meunier, and chardonnay; however there are some lesser known grapes that can be used as well.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS CALIFORNIA AND VIRGINIA: OCTOBER
Someone mentions American wines and what comes to your head first; Napa Valley and Sonoma? Both of which are located in California. California has an illustrious winemaking career that started more than 240 years ago when a Franciscan missionary established the first known vineyard in California. Since then, California’s wine industry has only grown exponentially in size! In the last twenty years the wine industry has really taken off. Quite the improvement from the lousy wines the colonists where producing in the 1600’s and finally recovering from the Civil War and Prohibition. There are 9 wine regions in Virginia, 27 wine trails, over 250 wineries, 7 viticultural areas, and is the 5th largest grape producer in the US.

AFFORDABLE WINES FOR THE HOLIDAYS: NOVEMBER
With the holidays right upon us it usually entails family gatherings and an endless amount of festivities! This tasting will be themed to finding the perfect wines everyone will enjoy that won’t break your budget! Not only that, but we will be doing some rather unconventional food and wine pairings. Most people, when they think of pairing wine with food, it’s usually wine with the main course; pasta, steak, seafood, etc. But did you know you can actually pair your desserts with wine as well? And more specifically cookies with wine? When pairing cookies and wine there is a general rule you want to follow: you want a wine that matches the weight and complexity of your cookies, and enough acidity to balance the sugar. And what’s better than cookies right out of the oven and a bottle of wine?

AFFORDABLE WINES FOR THE HOLIDAYS: DECEMBER
